Teeming shallow reefs, submerged canyons and visiting oceanic sunfish are just a few of the underwater attractions. Bali is encircled by reefs that offer excellent and varied year round diving and snorkeling. Some of the best and most varied coral in Bali, with plenty of fish. Wall dives down to about 43m; visibility up to 20m. The main diving area is at Jemeluk. A massive sloping terrace of hard and soft coral, leads to a wall dropping to a depth of more than 40m. Gorgonians, fans, basket sponges and table coral are especially good, there's a high density of fish (including schools of red tooth trigger fish and sergeant major)with sharks, wrasses and parrot fish spotted in the outer parts, and the current is generally slow. Advanced divers can explore Gili Selang, the eastern trip of Bali, where a pristine reef, pelagic and exciting currents are the draw. Other dives in the area include the wreck at Lipah and dramatic drift dive at Bunutan with the chance to see schools of barracuda and giant barrel sponges.
Amed beach is an area of peaceful bays, clear waters and stunning coastal views. Accommodation is spread along an eleven kilometer stretch from Amed to Aas and, although it's developing fast, it's an ideal area for a peaceful few days of sunbathing, snorkeling and diving. Accommodation is mushrooming quickly as word spread about the glorious coastline, peace and quiet and underwater attractions, and there's a great selection of excellent value places to stay from classy hotels to budget backpacker bungalows. Lipah and Bunutan are the most developed areas, though even these remain quiet and low key. The beaches are largely stoney and you'll share them with plenty of local boats (Jukung) but it is the coral reefs and offshore wrecks that make this a great centre for diver and snorkelers.
